Under the direction of the director, the Iowa Department of Public Health exercises general supervision of the stateís public health; promotes public hygiene and sanitation; does health promotion activities, prepares for and responds to bioemergency situations; and, unless otherwise provided, enforces laws on public health.
The departmentís programs are conducted through six major divisions and the executive staff:
The Director's Office activities primarily focus on the overall development of health-related policy, strategic planning and outcome overall.
The Iowa State Board of Health is the policy-making body for the Iowa Department of Public Health. It has the powers and duties to adopt, promulgate, amend and repeal rules and regulations, and advises or makes recommendations to the governor, General Assembly, and the director of Public Health, on public health, hygiene, and sanitation.
