It is the responsibility of the Bureau of Substance Abuse to license and monitor approximately 110 substance abuse and problem gambling treatment programs, which include community-based, hospital-based, assessment and evaluation only, and correctional facility programs.
Bureau staff provide technical assistance to programs in the general areas of clinical services, program administration and overall compliance with licensure standards. Staff also provide technical assistance on utilization of the American Society of Addiction Medicine PPC-2R criteria, required for treatment placement and continued stay decisions.
Staff investigate complaints against substance abuse and problem gambling treatment programs by conducting on-site investigations or resolving the complaint through the program's internal grievance process.
The Bureau maintains comprehensive listings of licensed programs and available services. Staff provide referral assistance to the general public and also support the Iowa Central Opioid Addiction Treatment Registry.
