Immunization Program Home

The goal of the Immunization Program is to reduce and ultimately eliminate the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases by working in conjunction with public and private health care providers throughout the state.

Accomplishing this goal will require achieving and maintaining high vaccination coverage levels, improving vaccination strategies among under vaccinated populations, prompt reporting and thorough investigation of suspected cases and rapid institution of disease control measures.

If children do not receive vaccine(s) or do not receive vaccine (s) according to the medically recommended schedule, the consequences may include:

  • Contracting the illness the vaccine is designed to prevent (the outcomes of these illnesses may include one or more of the following: certain types of cancer, pneumonia, illness requiring hospitalization, death, brain damage, paralysis, meningitis, seizures, and deafness; other severe and permanent effects from these vaccine-preventable diseases are possible as well).
  • Carrying and transmitting the disease to others (including those too young to be vaccinated or those with immune problems), possibly requiring children to stay out of child care or school and requiring someone to miss work to stay home with the child during disease outbreaks.

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices all strongly recommend vaccines and the administration of vaccine(s) according to routine medical recommendations. The following IDPH, Immunization Program webpages provide information and resources regarding vaccines and vaccine preventable diseases.
